A quick post today, on the difference between a bonus and an incentive.
We often use these two terms without making a true distinction, but in truth, they are slightly different.
Both of them commission and guaranteed bonuses elements of compensation that go above and beyond the normal, recurring income of the employee base pay or basic + allowances.
But they differ as follows : A bonus is a payment which is backward-looking and code of pen and discretionary or at least not expected from the employee s.
A decision is made to pay it to one, a group or all employees, based on criteria decided by management to reward past achievements, such as reaching a specific profit or some important milestones for the organisation, or in a totally discretionary manner.
So it is generally decided after the fact.
A bonus is usually paid in cash, or sometimes in cash-equivalent such as stock options or other forms of equity.
A bonus is non-guaranteed and usually on-the-spot ie just after the ac tleading to its payment.
An incentive is a plan which is forward-looking.
Payment is tied to the achievement of specific objectives that have been pre-determined and communicated to the employees that are on the plan.
The purpose of the incentive scheme is to influence behaviour to reach the objectives by providing an incentive to work towards the goals.
An incentive can be paid in cash or in non-monetary award, for example some gifts or travel especially for sales.
The commission and guaranteed bonuses plan is not discretionary : if the upfront, agreed objectives are reached, the commission and guaranteed bonuses or award is made.

Keep up the good work!
Most of the time people use bonus and incentive without knowing the fact.
I agree that incentive plans are defined and agreed upon in advance, with a clear understanding of the target, thresholds, what the payout is at x target achievement, etc.
Thanks, Glenn Hi Glenn, Comments are always welcome!
So I like to stick to a commission and guaranteed bonuses word even if it is a bit less accurate.

Are Commissions and Bonuses Income for Child Support Calculations?
When determining child support, the court determines the gross income for each party, and then puts that income in the guidelines child support calculator.
The calculator determines what each party should owe for child support and factors in parenting time as well as health and childcare costs.
The first step though is determining gross income.
For parties who have a base salary plus commissions or bonuses, determining gross income is a more complex process.
Gross income is defined in Minnesota Statute 518A.
One method of factoring commissions into a gross income amount is to take an average of the commissions using employment records over the past year or more.
The most difficult scenario is the situation where commissions may have been historically high but due to economic factors, commissions and sales opportunities have dropped.
The court has to balance the interest in providing children the support they deserve, and the realistic income available for support.
As you can imagine, this can be a complex balancing act.
Bonus income can be even more problematic.
If a party has not gotten every bonus, it will be more difficult to claim the bonus is regular income for child support purposes.
Determining child support can involve a complicated legal analysis and even small details can make a commission and guaranteed bonuses from one case to the next.
The best way to determine the of child support due in any case is to consult with an experienced family attorney.

In short, being paid on commission means you are rewarded based on the amount of a certain product you sell or deals you close.
There are four main commission structures that companies use.
Here is a closer look at each.
Straight Commission Basically, employees paid on straight commission only receive pay for the actual products they sell.
Some common examples of industries that use straight commission include sales, real estate, cosmetics or other retail sectors.
Best for: Shorter sales cycles or one-call closes, expensive products that will generate sizable commissions e.
Base Salary plus Commission Using this model, employees make a base or minimum salary and then receive sales commission in addition to it.
Sometimes, companies will offer this type of compensation when hiring new employees to allow them to build their commission and guaranteed bonuses or account lists.
This is also a better idea for industries with longer sales cycles or that require a salesperson to gain expertise over time, such as selling a software application.
Best for: Longer sales commission and guaranteed bonuses, new salespeople or those building their account list.
Draw Against Commission This allows employees to receive an advance against future commissions they may earn.
Companies with longer sales cycles that only offer straight commission compensation typically offer this to help employees that may experience inconsistent cash flow.
Most companies will deduct from a future paycheck anything above what the employee actually earned.
Some organizations do not require instant payback, giving employees the chance to make up the difference over time.
Best for: Straight commission models and longer sales cycles.
Guarantee Against Commission Similar to a draw, a guarantee is the minimum salary the salesperson will receive in advance regardless of commission earnings.
Unlike a draw, a guarantee does not need to be paid back.
Best for: New products with an uncertain market and longer sales cycles.
For the most part, commission models are typically used when compensating salespeople.
Consultants that sell services are also good candidates for commission structures.
In draw or guarantee sales models, any current or advanced commissions commission and guaranteed bonuses count as one income.
Paying your employees on commission and guaranteed bonuses can be a great incentive for top performers and is a way to encourage your salespeople to excel.
Not everyone will thrive under a commission-based pay system, check this out those who feel the need to prove themselves through hard work will take great pride in earning themselves and, in turn, your business more revenue.
